Message from Elaine Goldstine, CEO of the Jewish Federation of Winnipeg June 2019:

posted here June 1

Dear Community Members,

The last month was incredible for our community, which saw us come together at several events.

At the end of April, we remembered the millions of lives that were extinguished during the Shoah over a week of community commemoration services, culminating in our Annual Public Holocaust Commemoration at the Legislature on May 2. Hundreds of people, including Holocaust survivors, members of government, and students, stood together to remember and vowed: “never again”.

On May 7, the annual Yom Hazikaron ceremony was held at the Berney Theatre to remember fallen soldiers who perished defending the State of Israel. Two nights later, we had our community Yom Ha’atzmaut celebration where over 2,500 people gathered at the Asper Jewish Community Campus for an evening of celebration, Israeli food, dancing, and fireworks. The event featured the first ever appearance of our new Federation mascot, Lior, who was given a warm welcome by all in attendance, especially the children!

Our annual Kavod Eveningwas a resounding success. Hundreds of community members gathered at Congregation Etz Chayim on May 16 to honour the notable contributions of the many volunteers in our community. We are so fortunate to have so many individuals who give of their time and energy to making our community a better place.

On May 29, Laurel Malkin and I attended an event organized by Solly and Orly Dreman for an Israeli organization called Ezer Mizion. This organization provides assistance to those with life threatening diseases. Help save a life! Further details on how you can participate will be announced shortly.

I am pleased to announce that our volunteer campaign chair for the 2019-2020 Combined Jewish Appeal (CJA) Campaign is Barry McArton. Barry brings with him a wealth of knowledge in fundraising and marketing and is actively planning for this year’s campaign. Welcome to the team, Barry!

Lastly, some big news this week on the political front; Bill C-85, An Act to amend the Canada-Israel Free Trade Agreement Implementation Act, was given royal assent. The modernized Canada-Israel Free Trade Agreement (CIFTA) will reduce red tape, provide increased market access, more predictable trading conditions, and ensure that the economic gains for businesses are not only greater, but are sustainable and inclusive for both Canada and Israel. Please stay tuned for further developments.
On behalf of all of us at the Jewish Federation of Winnipeg, I would like to wish you a Shabbat Shalom!

Elaine Goldstine
